Is AI SEO different from regular SEO?
Updated 4 August 2026

AI SEO and old SEO share a lot. Both reward a clear website, real reviews, and pages that answer real buyer questions. The difference is where they end. SEO puts a link to your site on the results page. AI SEO gets your business named inside the answer, where there is no list to climb. Ranking first on Google no longer means AI will name you.
You can rank first and still be missing
On Google
You rank first.
In the AI answer
For a reliable plumber near you, two names stand out: Dayle & Sons and Marsh Plumbers.
Your name is not here.
You rank first on Google for plumbers in your town. You did the SEO work and it paid off. The top link is yours.
Now a buyer asks ChatGPT for a good plumber near them. The answer names two other shops. Your name is not in it. The ranking that took you years did not carry you into the answer.
The answer is a different place. There is no list of ten links to climb. AI reads pages, picks a few businesses, and names them. Being first on Google is not the same as being named by AI.
Check it: search your main term on Google and note your rank. Then ask ChatGPT the same question a buyer would ask. See if your name is in the answer at all.
What carries over
What carries over from SEO
Good SEO builds the base AI reads.
Here is the good news. The base is shared. AI reads the same clean pages and trusts the same sites that good SEO already builds.
Clear text, honest reviews, and real answers to real questions count in both places. Your SEO work is not wasted. It is the floor AI stands on when it decides who to name.
AI leans on the sites it already trusts in your market, and those are the same directories and review sites your SEO cares about.
Where SEO stops short
What a Google rank misses
A top ranking gives you none of these on its own.
The gap starts with the goal. Keyword pages and backlinks aim at a rank. AI does not rank a list. It reads what it can and names a few businesses.
Some old habits even backfire. A thin page stuffed with keywords gives AI nothing solid to repeat. A security setting that blocks crawlers can shut AI out of your site while Google still gets in.
So the facts a buyer needs, your services, your area, your prices, have to sit in plain words on the page. AI cannot say what it cannot read.
It is one job now, in two places
You do not throw SEO away. You extend it. The same site now has to work for a search engine and for an AI reading it out loud.
Keep the basics that already rank you. Then add the parts AI needs: plain facts, a strong presence where AI reads, and one clear story about your business across the web.
- 1Keep your SEO basics: a fast, clear site and a full Google listing.
- 2State your services, area and prices in plain text on the page.
- 3Earn reviews on the sites AI reads in your trade.
- 4Show up where buyers see AI outside the chatbots too, like Google's AI Overviews.
- 5Check what AI says about you, not just your Google rank.
See what AI says, not just your rank
Where AI names Harwood Plumbing
First on Google, named by AI in one place.
Your Google rank tells you one thing. It does not tell you whether AI names you. On the Snuup plan, every month we ask ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity the questions your buyers ask and show you where your name comes up.
Start with Snuup's free AI visibility check. It reads your website and shows what is holding you back. Fix that, and each month's answers show whether your name is moving in.
