Does Google Business Profile affect AI recommendations?
Updated 21 October 2026

Yes, most directly in Google's own AI. Gemini, Ask Maps in Google Maps and the AI answers in Google Search draw on Google's place data, which is where your profile's category, hours, service area and reviews live. ChatGPT says it gets nearby business listings from outside providers it does not name, so your profile is not a pass into every AI answer. A complete profile is the base for Google's AI, and the same facts need to match on every other site that lists you.
Google's own AI answers from your profile
Is there a locksmith open now in Millbrook?
Ironside Locksmiths is open around the clock and reviewers mention fast lockout help. QuickTurn Lock Co is open until 10 PM and does car keys.

In March 2026 Google added Ask Maps to Google Maps: a buyer types a question and Gemini answers it. Google says it draws on more than 300 million places and the reviews of more than 500 million contributors. It started in the U.S. and India, on Android and iPhone.
Gemini does the same outside Maps. Google's Gemini documentation says it can answer place questions from Google Maps data: places, reviews, photos, addresses and opening hours. In Search, Google's guide to its AI features says Business Profiles can help your services show up in AI answers.
The facts on your profile are what those answers repeat. If a buyer asks who is open now and your profile has no hours, Google's AI has nothing to say about you, so it names a business it can answer for.
Check it: open Google Maps on your phone and ask the question a buyer would ask, like is there a locksmith open now near me. Leave your own name out. Note who comes up and what facts are shown beside each one.
Fill in the fields a buyer's question needs
Brightwater's Google Business Profile
A buyer asked who is open now. Brightwater's profile cannot answer that.
Google says it plainly in its local ranking help: businesses with complete and accurate information are more likely to show up in local results. It ranks on how well a profile matches the search, how far the business is and how well known it is, and more reviews and good ratings help. It also says you cannot pay for a better local ranking.
Think of each field as the answer to a question buyers ask. Hours answer “open now”. The service area answers “near me” for a business that drives to its customers. Services answer “who does car keys”. A blank field is a question you have left to a rival.
Check it: search your business name on Google Maps and open your own profile. Write down every field that is blank, wrong or out of date.
- 1Pick the one primary category that matches what buyers search for.
- 2Set your hours, and special hours for holidays.
- 3If you go to your customers, set the towns you cover as your service area.
- 4List your services in the words a buyer would type.
- 5Add real photos of your work, your van or your shop.
ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity look elsewhere
Where AI looks up a local business
Gemini
Google Maps data: places, reviews, hours
ChatGPT
Business listings from outside providers it does not name
Perplexity
A web search, plus Yelp's data, added in 2024
Claude
The pages its web search finds
Only Google's AI says it reads your Business Profile.
Of the companies behind these AIs, only Google says its AI reads Business Profiles. OpenAI's help page says ChatGPT can share your location with outside providers that supply nearby business listings. It does not say which ones.
Perplexity searches the web for every answer, and in 2024 it started showing Yelp's data for local businesses, which our Perplexity guide covers. Claude answers from the pages its web search finds.
So a perfect Google profile can still leave you out of a ChatGPT answer. Those answers come from the other listings, review sites and pages that name local businesses.
Check it: ask ChatGPT the same buyer question and open its sources. See which sites it names businesses from, and whether you are on them.

The old Yelp page still has the hours and number from two years ago.
Your profile is one listing among many. When your website, Yelp page and directory listings say different hours or a different phone, AI has to pick one, and it may pick the old one. That is how a business ends up described wrong in an AI answer.
Treat the Google profile as the master copy. Every time you change your hours, phone or address there, change it on your website and every other listing the same day.
Check it: search your business name with your phone number in Google. Open every listing that comes up and compare its hours, phone and address with your profile.
See whether AI finds you on the map
On the map, but missing from the answers: the profile is the next fix.
On the Snuup plan, every month we ask ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity the questions your buyers ask and show you every answer: where you are named and who is named instead.
You keep your Google profile up to date yourself. We fix your website and write new blog posts for it, so AI finds the same facts there. Each month's answers show whether Gemini starts naming you.
