How do I get my business recommended by Perplexity?
Updated 20 October 2026

Perplexity searches the web each time someone asks a question, then names businesses from the pages it finds and links those pages under the answer. To get recommended, let its crawler, PerplexityBot, read your site. Get your business onto the pages it already cites for your trade, like Yelp, local lists and forum threads. Because it shows its sources, you can see exactly which pages to work on.
Perplexity shows where its answer came from
Who is a good dog groomer in Eastside?
Sudsy Paws is well reviewed for nervous dogs [1] [3]. The Grooming Barn takes large breeds and walk-ins [2].

Perplexity does not answer from memory alone. It searches the web when the question is asked and writes a short answer from what it finds. Its help center says every answer comes with citations and links to the original sources.
For a local question, the answer names a few businesses, and the number beside each name points to the page that put it there. A Yelp page, a local best-of list, a forum thread. That list is your to-do list: the pages that name your rivals are the pages you need to be on.
Check it: ask Perplexity the question a buyer would ask, with your town in it, like who is a good dog groomer in Eastside. Leave your own name out. Open every source under the answer and write down which ones name a rival and not you.
Let PerplexityBot read your site
What to look for in robots.txt
Your file lives at yourdomain.com/robots.txt.
Perplexity finds pages with its own crawler, PerplexityBot. Its documentation recommends allowing PerplexityBot in your robots.txt if you want to show up in its results, and says a change can take up to 24 hours to reach its systems.
A site can block it without the owner knowing. A line meant for one crawler, a Disallow under User-agent: * or a firewall's bot setting can each keep it out. The same file decides whether ChatGPT can read you, which our robots.txt guide walks through line by line.
Check it: open yourdomain.com/robots.txt in a browser. Look for PerplexityBot, and for Disallow: / under User-agent: *. Either one keeps Perplexity from reading your pages.

Where Fernhollow is missing
Claim it, add services and hours
Email the writer one new fact
Answer as yourself, by the rules
Each of these pages names a rival. None of them names Fernhollow.
Your own site is one source among many. If the sources under your buyers' question are review sites, local lists and threads, those pages decide who gets named, and getting onto them moves you more than another page on your own site.
For local businesses, Yelp matters in particular. In 2024 Perplexity started showing Yelp's maps, reviews and photos inside its answers. For hotels, it added Tripadvisor's reviews.
Because Perplexity searches as each question comes in, a new listing can start showing up once Perplexity has found the page. Nobody can promise when.
Check it: search your business name on Yelp. If there is no claimed page with your services and hours, start there.
- 1Claim your Yelp page and fill in what you do, where and when you are open.
- 2Ask the writer of each local list that names your rivals to look at you too. Give them one fact worth adding.
- 3Answer real questions in the threads it cites, as yourself and within each forum's rules.
- 4Ask happy customers for a review on the site Perplexity cites most for your trade.

The first lines of Fernhollow's page

Who, where, what it costs: the facts a buyer asked for, in the first two sentences.
Perplexity writes a short answer from the pages it reads. A page that says plainly who you are, where you work and what it costs gives it facts to use. A page that opens with a welcome message gives it nothing to repeat.
Give each common buyer question its own page or section: prices, the areas you cover, what you do and do not do. Put the answer in the first two sentences, in the words a buyer would type.
Check it: read the first two sentences of your main service page out loud. If they do not say what you do, where and roughly what it costs, rewrite them.

Fernhollow is named in 1 of 3 Perplexity answers.
One question by hand shows you one answer. snuup asks Perplexity, ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini the questions your buyers ask and shows you every answer: where you are named, who is named instead, and the sites behind it. It also flags a robots.txt line or firewall setting that keeps PerplexityBot out.
Each problem comes with its fix. On the monthly plan we do the fixes and check again every month with the same questions, so you see whether Perplexity starts naming you.
Questions
Where does Perplexity get its information about businesses?
It searches the web when the question is asked and builds the answer from the pages it finds, with a link to each one. For local businesses it began showing data licensed from Yelp in 2024, such as maps, reviews and photos. For hotels it added Tripadvisor's reviews.
How long does it take to show up on Perplexity?
Nobody can promise a date. Perplexity says a robots.txt change can take up to 24 hours to reach its systems. A new listing or page can appear in answers once Perplexity has found it, but whether you get named depends on what the other sources say about you.
Does blocking PerplexityBot keep me out of Perplexity?
It keeps your own pages out. PerplexityBot is the crawler that finds pages to show and link in Perplexity's results, so a block means your site stops being one of them. Other sites can still mention you, so you may still be named, but only from pages you do not control.
Is getting recommended by Perplexity different from ChatGPT?
Mostly it is the same work: trusted pages that name you and a site that answers the question. The difference is that Perplexity searches for every answer and lists its sources, so you can see which pages decide it. That makes it the easiest of the AI assistants to work on page by page.
Does snuup check Perplexity?
Yes. Type your website at snuup.ai. We ask Perplexity, ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini the questions your buyers ask and show who they name. You see whether Perplexity names you, which rival it names instead, and whether your site blocks PerplexityBot.
What happens after the snuup check?
The free check shows where you stand and what is holding you back. On the monthly plan we do the fixes and check again every month with the same questions, so you see whether Perplexity starts naming you. You can cancel anytime.
