Why doesn't ChatGPT recommend my business?

Updated 24 July 2026

ChatGPT recommends businesses it has seen praised in the places it reads: review sites, best-of lists, Reddit threads, and the news. Those pages count for more than your own website. If they never name you, ChatGPT names a competitor they do. Sometimes the cause is technical: your website blocks AI without you knowing. Every cause has a fix.

How ChatGPT picks who to recommend

What's the best meal prep service for a busy family?

“For families, Table Readyis the usual pick. The menu changes weekly and the kids' portions are easy.”

Someone asks ChatGPT for the best meal prep service for a busy family. ChatGPT answers in one of two ways. The first way is from memory. That memory comes from the public web pages it read during training. It can be a year old or more. The second way is live search. ChatGPT searches the web, reads the pages that rank for the question, and builds its answer from them.

Both ways share one rule. ChatGPT leans on what other people write about you, not on what you write about yourself. Your homepage says you are great. Every homepage says that. A review, a ranked list, or a busy Reddit thread that names you counts for more.

So when ChatGPT skips your business, one of six things is going on. Each one has a check you can run today, for free.

Reason 1: The sites ChatGPT trusts don't mention you

What ChatGPT reads before it answers

  • Review sites for your market
  • Best-of lists that rank on Google
  • Reddit and forum threads
  • News and local press
  • Your own websitecounts the least

This is the top reason. ChatGPT builds recommendations out of pages other people wrote: review sites, best-of lists, forums, news. If those pages never name you, ChatGPT has no material to recommend you with. It is not ignoring you. It has never read about you.

Check it: search Google for the thing your buyer would type, like best meal prep for busy families. Open the first five results. Count how often your business shows up. That count is close to what ChatGPT sees. Then search reddit.com for the same words. Count again.

Reason 2: Your website blocks AI from reading it

yoursite.com/robots.txt

User-agent: GPTBot

Disallow: /

These two lines lock ChatGPT out of every page on the site.

AI companies read websites with their own crawlers. OpenAI's crawler is called GPTBot. A file on your website called robots.txt can tell crawlers to stay out. Some website builders and firewalls block AI crawlers by default. The owner never hears about it.

Check it: open yoursite.com/robots.txt in your browser. Look for the names GPTBot, ClaudeBot or PerplexityBot. The word Disallow under one of those names means that AI is locked out.

Reason 3: Your homepage never says plainly what you sell

AI needs one clear sentence: what you sell, who buys it, where. Site owners write around it. A homepage that says “Crafted moments, delivered” sounds nice to a person. A machine files it under nothing.

Check it: open your homepage. Read only the first screen. Could a stranger repeat what you sell after five seconds? If not, AI can't either.

Reason 4: Your details don't match across the web

This one hits local businesses hardest. Your name, category, address and hours live in several places: your site, your Google Business Profile, Yelp, directories. AI reads them side by side. Mixed details read as doubt. A business AI is unsure about gets skipped, not flagged.

Check it: put your business name into Google. Open your Google Business Profile, your site and your top directory listings. The name, the category and the address should match everywhere.

Reason 5: You compete on a question you can't win yet

Best yoga mat belongs to brands with thousands of mentions. Best extra-long yoga mat for tall people does not. AI answers narrow questions with narrow winners. Small businesses get named on the narrow questions first. That is where your first mention comes from.

Check it: ask ChatGPT the broad question for your market. Then ask a narrower one that fits you. Note where your name starts to appear.

Reason 6: You're too new for its memory

ChatGPT's memory stops before the model shipped. A young business can be missing from memory through no fault of its own. Live search can still find you today. That is why fresh mentions and pages that rank matter more when your business is new.

Check it: ask ChatGPT about your business twice. Once in a normal chat. Once with web search turned on. If you only show up with search on, memory doesn't know you yet.

What's the best [what you sell] for [who buys it]?

What do you know about [your business]?

Is [your business] worth it?

ChatGPTClaudeGeminiPerplexityask each one, in a fresh chat

You can check this yourself in five minutes. Open a fresh chat with no history, in a private window. ChatGPT remembers your old chats. Your own account gives you a friendlier answer than your buyers get.

  1. 1.Ask the question your buyer would ask, like best meal prep for busy families. Don't name your business.
  2. 2.Ask: what do you know about [your business]?
  3. 3.Ask: is [your business] worth it?
  4. 4.Turn web search on. Ask all three again.

What the answers tell you

Read the answers like a buyer would. Are you named at all? Who gets named instead? Those names are your real competitors in AI answers. Which sites does the answer link to? Those are the pages you need to be on.

What actually gets you recommended

The fix list is short. It is ranked by what moves AI answers fastest.

  1. 1.Find the pages AI reads for your market. Search your buyer's question. The sites that keep ranking are the ones to get into. Get listed there, get reviewed there, or pitch the writer.
  2. 2.Answer real threads where your buyers ask for advice. AI reads Reddit closely. Post as yourself. Say you run the business. Be useful first.
  3. 3.Unblock the AI crawlers in your robots.txt file.
  4. 4.Put one clear sentence at the top of your homepage: what you sell, who it is for, where.
  5. 5.Make your name, category and address match everywhere they appear.

How fast this works

Live-search answers can pick up new pages about you within weeks. Memory changes when a new model ships. Nobody outside these companies controls that date. Expect months for the full effect. This work adds up. A real mention keeps working for years.

Questions

What does the free snuup check show?+

Type your website at snuup.ai. We ask ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity the questions your buyers ask. You see who they recommend and what they say about you. No signup. The full check adds the problems we found on your site and the fix for each one.

How does snuup find the problems on my website?+

We read your public website the way AI reads it. That surfaces the technical problems: a blocked AI crawler, a dead page AI keeps linking to, a homepage that never says what you sell. Each problem comes with proof and a fix.

Can I pay ChatGPT to recommend my business?+

No. ChatGPT does not sell placement inside answers today. Nobody can buy a mention, including us. Mentions on pages AI trusts are the only way in. Some review sites do sell listings. That deal is between you and them.

Does snuup check more than ChatGPT?+

Yes. The check asks ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity separately, because the sources differ. Perplexity searches the web for nearly every answer. Gemini leans on Google results and Google Business Profiles. A fix that helps one of them usually helps them all.

How long until ChatGPT mentions me?+

Weeks at the earliest. That happens through live search reading fresh pages about you. Answers from memory change when a new model version ships. That can take months. Apply your fixes, then run the check again to see what changed.

Is this just SEO with a new name?+

It overlaps with SEO. Pages that rank feed AI answers, so ranking still helps. The difference: AI reads reviews, forums and lists more than it reads your website. Work on your own site alone is not enough.
